Kenneth George Starkey was born October 5, 1957 at Cheyenne River Agency to Jay and Phoebe Starkey.

He moved to Chandler, AZ during his early school years eventually graduating from Chandler High School. Kenneth met the mother of his children at the age of 16, marrying her at 19. Together they had two children before divorcing in 1986. He lived in Arizona until his death.

Kenneth spent his early life after high school working as an electrical linesman in Texas, driving cotton roads in Arizona, Texas and California, and as a construction roofer in Arizona. He also worked for Hamer Ltd Propane Conversion and owned and operated Wachendorf Trucking for several years.

Kenneth enjoyed his Native heritage and was referred to as “Little Squirrel” when he was young. When he was a teenager his friends gave him the nickname of “Cherokee”. Kenny loved the outdoors. He spent his free time as a young man hunting with guns, bows, and loved fishing as well as camping. He also enjoyed these activities with his children teaching his son to shoot guns at a young age. Kenny had a smile that would light up a room, and the most important things in his life were his children; whom he loved with all his heart. Even though he left the reservation as a young child, he never forgot where he came from, and always had hopes of returning one day. In the end his wish has come true, as he is returned to White Horse to be laid to rest.

He was also an avid guitar player; his favorite song was “Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain” by Willie Nelson. Kenny loved to laugh and will be well remembered for this. God Bless and Rest in Peace Kenny.

Kenny is survived by his children: Cory (Trina) Mitchell Wachendorf of Casa Grande, AZ and Kelley Marie (Chris) Mahon of Dallas, TX; his grandchildren: Hunter & Brody Wachendorf, Christopher Jr. & Cameron Mahon, and Kayla, Adrian & Damon Zepeda; sisters: Jackie Dunn of Eagle Butte, Stacey Davis of Ft. Lauderdale, FL and Patricia “Patty” Starkey of Rapid City; brothers: Antoine “Tony” Starkey of Rapid City and James Starkey of Bisbee, MT; many nieces and nephews as well as his adoptive mother, Donna Wachendorf.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Phoebe and Jay Starkey; brother, Michael Wachendorf; grandparents, Manuel & Ella Jewett; adoptive father, Thomas Wachendorf; grandmother, Dora Zitzman.

Luce Funeral Chapel of Eagle Butte has been entrusted with Kenneth’s arrangements.
